July 2012
We drove home to Minnesota at the start of the month. We thought we'd be getting away from the heat and wildfires here in Colorado, but that was not quite the case. The entire country seemed to be dealing with record-breaking temperatures at the start of July, and Minnesota was no exception to that. It was almost as hot there, as it was here at home. Tack on the humidity, and it was almost miserable. Thankfully, Granny and Gramps have a house on a lake.
We drove to Hanska first to visit with Grandma Irene, Sharon and the Hanson's. Grandma Irene was flown to the Mayo hospital last month for an emergency surgery. She had an aneurysm and needed immediate attention and surgery. God was looking out for her the whole time. She pulled through the surgery and recovered quickly. Although she was not able to go back to the farm right away, we were able to visit with her at the Hanson's. We got to enjoy some good food and great company before driving the rest of the way to the cabin.
As was mentioned earlier, it was quiet hot this year, so we spent the bulk of our time in the water or in the house. We spent so much time cooling off in the water, we didn't even get to fish this year. From the sounds of it though, the fish weren't biting too much. One evening there were quite a few fish around the dock, so we had fun catching them. That was the closest we came to fishing this trip.
On the Fourth, we took the kids into Longville for the turtle races. It was soooooo hot. The kids were dripping with sweat and beat red by the time it was their turn. Their turtles must have felt the heat too because neither one really moved much. Thankfully, there is an ice cream shop near by. Even though the ice cream melted quick, it was super yummy. Easton enjoyed almost all of Dad's ice cream cone. Lesson learned, he will want his own next time.
A storm blew in on the evening of the Fourth, so we weren't sure if there would be fireworks to watch? We were planning on taking the kids into town, but the storm came with some severe lighting and thunder. Kyla was scared by that and did not want to risk leaving the house to see any fireworks. So...it was bedtime as usual for the kids. The adults enjoyed some good conversations and watched the neighbors light up whatever they had with them.
Kyla and Easton had a blast in the water. By the end of the week, Easton had become almost adventurous out there. If only we had water to play in every day here at home.
Upon returning home, Kyla had another VBS. This one was at her pre-school. Grace attended too, and the girls were in the same class again. Kyla had a lot of fun. She learned some great lessons and had fun playing with Grace.
We went to more craft activities at Michael's this month. Free is always fun! Kyla has an entire drawer in her nightstand filled with everything she made at Michael's. It's a lot! Thankfully for mom, there are no activities in August. :D
Easton is becoming a little parrot for Miss Theresa. He is repeating so much of what she is saying these days. If he can't say the whole word, he at least gets out one or two sounds. He cannot say many "b" or "p" words yet, but those are the hardest for anyone. He is due for his sixth month evaluation soon. We can't wait to hear, in exact words, how much he has accomplished.
Grace turned five this month. She had a swim party at the recreation center. Easton and Kyla had so much fun celebrating with her. All the kids had fun. It was a great party and a nice way to celebrate Grace's big day.
Scott and I were able to get out and enjoy another "free" lunch at the Melting Pot. (Free is in quotes because it is not really free after the tip and paying the babysitter). As usual, the food was yummy! We can't wait to go again. I won a free VIP dinner last month for submitting the best fatherly advice on their Facebook page, so hopefully we can enjoy the free dinner sooner rather than later.
A friend of mine was given some free tickets to see Neil Diamond at the First Bank Center in Broomfield. No one else wanted to go, so she took me. I could not have been happier. I have always wanted to see him in concert. He was great and sang some of my favorites. Sweet Caroline is quite the crowd-pleaser. He must have sang the chorus an extra twelve times because everyone in the crowd knew the words. I'd love to see him again. Maybe he will come back through before retiring completely?
Scott's softball team did not win again this year. Bummer! They did win both of the games we came to, so maybe we are the key? Maybe, just maybe, their super fan (me) plays a more pivotal role than anyone realized? Here's to hoping fall ball pans out better for them.
My mom moved out of my childhood home and into a one bedroom apartment this month. It is going to be very strange calling her at a different number and addressing mail to a different address. You become accustomed to some things not changing; especially after 23 years. It is a bit sad knowing I will not be able to see or set foot into my "home" anymore, but I know this change is best for her.
We miss and love all of you. Feel free to leave us a comment. It's a good way to let us know someone out there is reading this. :-) Take care and God Bless.
